Rokken Café is closing October 1st

The Board of Studentsamskipnaden i Volda (SiVolda) has decided to discontinue café operations at the student house in Volda from 1 October this year.

The decision is based on the café's weak financial performance over many years and the desire to use the premises for other forms of student welfare. Two people have been employed full-time at the café, and both have been given notice of termination effective from 1 October. Concerts, other student events and activities will not be affected by the closure.

Rokken Café opened as part of the Rokken student house in 2005 and has operated continuously ever since. The financial side of the operation has been challenging, and particularly in recent years, continuing the café has not been financially sustainable. In dialogue with Studentsamfunnet i Volda, Studentsamskipnaden has therefore decided not to continue the café operation, but instead to use the premises for other activities directly aimed at students.

From 1 January 2027, the limited company that operates the student house will also be dissolved. The legal operation of the student house will instead continue as a department within SiVolda, with Studentsamfunnet i Volda taking on an even more active role and greater responsibility in the day-to-day operation than before.

“It is, in a way, sad to close the café, but the Students’ Welfare Organisation cannot continue to cover the café's deficit when it is not used by students to a sufficient extent. In line with our strategy, we put students at the centre and want to use all our resources for student welfare,” says Rune Aasen, Managing Director of Studentsamskipnaden i Volda.
